On Saturday, April 6, 2019, at approximately 9:00 PM, unknown individuals threw a hand grenade into the home of Alireza Ahmadi, located at Haji Nowruz Square in Dasht-e-Barchi, west of Kabul. As a result, both Alireza Ahmadi and his wife, Laila Ahmadi, were killed.

The day before the attack, Alireza and his entire family had been invited to his daughter and son-in-law’s home in another part of Dasht-e-Barchi. After the gathering ended that evening, Alireza and his wife returned to their own home, while the rest of the family stayed overnight at their daughter’s house. Upon returning home, Alireza and Laila prepared to sleep, as they were observing a fast the following day and needed to wake early. Shortly after they went to bed, an assailant threw a hand grenade through the window into their bedroom. Laila Ahmadi was killed instantly. Neighbors rushed Alireza to Ibn Sina Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival. The next day, Alireza’s family members, including his son, Zainullah, came to the house and found the window shattered and the property sealed by local police. They were initially denied entry but were later allowed inside after authorization from a local community representative.

Alireza’s children later retrieved their parents’ bodies from the forensic medicine center in Darulaman. After officials confirmed that both had been killed by a hand grenade, the family proceeded with their burial.

During the presidency of Hamid Karzai, Alireza Ahmadi had worked as a tea attendant at the Ministry of Finance. After retiring, he purchased an excavator and worked in construction projects in western Kabul, particularly in Dasht-e-Barchi.
